Not sure how to care for your cut flowers once they've arrived? Read on. These steps may seem basic, but they're all every bit as important as they are simple. What matters most is making sure that your flowers get plenty of fresh, clean water, and that they're able to absorb it without any difficulty.

Let the flowers rehydrate.
When your flowers arrive, they'll be wrapped in a paper sleeve. Cut or tear off the bottom inch of this sleeve, clip the stems, and place your flowers in water, with the sleeve still on. It will support the flowers while they first rehydrate, which will take just a few hours.

Cut the stems.
Use a clean, sharp blade (scissors, pruners, and kitchen knives will all work) to clip at least an inch off each stem upon receipt. This will enable the flowers to drink plenty of water, resulting in a longer vase life.

Remove lower foliage.
Carefully remove any leaves that lie below the water line. Wet foliage can rot and cause bacterial growth, leading to dirty water and a dramatically shortened vase life.

Clean your vase.
Make sure your vase is thoroughly cleaned and rinsed before filling it with clean water, as bacteria in the vase damages flowers.

Use clean, lukewarm water.
Water that's too hot or cold can be shocking to flowers, and inhibit their ability to drink.

Add flower food.
You'll receive a packet of flower food with your package; be sure to use it! This mild antibacterial agent will help keep your water clean and fresh.

Keep out of heat or direct sun.
Your flowers will be happiest in a cool room (65-72 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal), away from any heat sources like TVs, heat vents, and sunny windows.

Check water level daily.
Never let your vase run dry! Your flowers may be extremely thirsty, especially when they first arrive. Be sure to check the water level daily. If the water gets low, add more. If it appears at all cloudy, change the water, rinse the stems and cut a new end on each stem.

Fresh Flower Care by Flower Thailand

Taking a few simple steps for proper care of your flower arrangement can more than double the viewing life of your cut flowers.

Water
The first and most obvious step is to get your flowers into water as soon as possible. Flowers are often refrigerated in floral shops, making them go dormant and extending their life. Once they warm up to room temperature, the flowers will become very "thirsty." Roses are especially notorious for high water use. Whether you have a vase or an arrangement in floral foam, keep your flowers watered everyday.

Food
The use of flower food is also key to extending the life of your fresh flowers. Flower food contains three key parts: a bleaching agent that kills bacteria that can cause decay, a sugar component to feed the blooms, and an acid to raise the pH of the water to a level beneficial for flowers. If you don't have any flower food, dropping an aspirin tablet in the water will also raise the pH.

Stems
If you have the time and a sharp knife, re-cutting the stems of the flowers will also add to the life of your arrangement. When pruning the stems make the cut approximately one to two inches above the original cut. It's very important to use a knife with a sharp edge because a dull knife might damage the stem and lead to shortened flower life. Make the cut on an angle and underwater in a sink or dish if possible. Cutting on an angle will make sure that water than enter the base of the stem. Cutting the stem underwater will decrease the chance of air pockets occurring in the flower stem. Air pockets can block the absorbtion of liquid and kill the flower. Removing any leaves on the stems that are below the waterline will also add to the life of your arrangement.

Location
Keeping flowers in a cool spot will add days to the life of your flowers. It's best to keep them out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources such as furnace vents, radiators, or the top of a television. Keep your flowers away from fans if possible to avoid dehydration. Close proximity to ripe fruit or cigarette smoke can also be detrimental to flowers as both create gases harmful to the blooms.

All of the above recommendations will help you get a lot more value out of your gift of flowers.

Flower Facts

Rose (rosa)
Roses originated in China but are now cultivated from America to the Far East. They are now available in a variety of colours except blue and true black. Roses are one of the most popular and best know flower throughout the world.

Care tips: Limp roses can be revived by standing in deep warm water, do not bash the stems as this will prevent them drinking water, leave the thorns if possible as removal can cause wounds where bacteria can enter. Roses should last about a week.

Lily (lilium candidum)
The origins of the Lily is thought to be China in the Middle Ages. Some forms are highly scented particularly some Oriental lilies, whereas many of the Asiatic lilies, although highly coloured are without a scent.

Care Tips: It is recommended that the pollen stamens are removed as this will prolong the life of the flower. If pollen does get onto any fabric “dab off” with sticky tape – do not use water.

Orchids (orchis)
Most orchids are indigenous to tropical regions of the world such as Asia and South America. They offer a colourful selection including black and green. Orchids are actually the largest plant family offering over 25,000 species, the most common of which are the Phalaenopsis, Denrobium and Cymbidium.

Care Tips: Cut orchids can last 2-3 weeks, keep the water fresh and recut their stems, they also like a light misting of water.

Alstroemeria
The Alstroemeria is so named after Claus Alstroemer, a botanical classifier who sent seeds back from South America of this particular flower. They appear like miniature lilies with spot or stripe markings. Flower breeders have developed a huge range of varieties offering a vast array or colours and markings.

Care tips: the leaves will often wilt long before the flowers, so remove all foliage, the flowers should last about 2 weeks in water.

Carnation ( dianthus)
The carnation is available all year round and offers a vast array of individual and multi-coloured flowers. They are available as a standard – being 1 flower per stem or as a spray which offers lots of smaller flowers per stem.

Care Tips: The carnation is a long lasting cut flower but should be kept away from any fruit or vegetables as they emit ethylene gas which will kill the flower.

Chrysanthemum
The “Mum” originates from China and Japan but the name derives from the Greek “krus anthemon” meaning gold flower, nowadays they are available in all colours from lime green to brick red. The flower comes in a large range of shapes and sizes including small buttons, spiky and large blooms

Gerbera
Pronounced Jur-bra, finds its origins in South Africa. There are over 200 varieties available offering a host of colours and different petal shapes. The mini gerbera or “germini” is quite a new development which still offers the variety of colours but are easier to use for flower arranging.

Care Tips: They love warmth and bright light.

Gypsophila (baby’s breath)
The botanical name means “lover of chalk” – this is the soil it loves to grow in. The plant is native to Eastern Europe and was first commercially grown in UK around 1759. It is generally known as having a white flower although cream and pale pink are sometimes available.

Care Tips: Keep the water clean and the flowers should last a long time.

Care of Cut Flowers after receiving as gift

Your flowers may be tired after their journey and so will need a big drink to help them perk up and some TLC. By following these simple care instructions you will help your flowers to grow and bloom. Here's what you'll need: scissors, a clean vase, luke warm water and your special flower food provided.

1) When you receive the flowers as gift, immediately place the stems at an angle of 45 degrees and cut 1 or 2 cm off the stem using a sharp knife.

2) Give the cutflowers clean or tap water and put them in a clean vase adding the correct amount of a preservative such as Chrysal.

3) If flowers appear more dull or limp or too cold on arrival, cut 5 cm off the stem.

4) Wrap the flowers in paper and put them in a cool place to recover for three hours.

5) Remove lower leaves and damaged ones.

6) After 3-4 days, if the flowers show dullness, cut the flowers with a sharp knife under an angle of 25 to 45 degrees. Never use a dull cutter or scissors as it will damage the stem, enabling the flower to take up any water.

7) Add water to the vase containing flowers or flower arrangement every day.

8) Put the flowers making an arrangement with vases. Vases are ideal for flowers as we can see the water level, and also cleaning the glass is easy.

9) Never mix fresh flowers with older flowers, as fresh flowers will be poisoned by stale water and bacteria.

10) While using leaf shine products, Keep them at a proper distance and spray very thinly.

11) Some flowers will grow 10-20 cm in the vase. Bear in mind the type of flowers you are making as an arrangement, as that can disturbs the design of the arrangement. Sometimes they get caught in the frame or construction and can not be opened sufficiently.

12) Keep the flowers away, developing slimy stems, as it causes the growth of bacteria in the water. Stems will become soft and rot away, e.g. Zantedeschia.

General Tips on Cut flower Care

1) Do not place the spring flowers in direct Sunlight.

2) Place the spring flowers away from fruit. Fruit gives off a natural gas that harms flowers.

3) If flowers starts to wilt, cut the stems an inch under cold running water, to remove air bubbles.

Care of Cut Flowers in an Arrangement

1) Do not overcrowd the flowers in the container.

2) Check the water level in the vase and replenish it frequently.

3) Flowers that go limp and not drinking well need to be recut.

4) Always discard wilted blooms.

5) Keep flowers away from drafts, direct sunlight, and ripening fruits, which emit ethylene gas, a substance that causes buds to remain closed, petals to have poor color, and flowers to have a shortened vase life.
